Creating a Community of Love and Support

“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” – Mother Theresa

True love is harmonious, love is forgiveness; love is trust and understanding, love is a commitment to stand in solidarity in good times and bad. Love is expressed by what we say and more importantly by what we do.

At A Safe Haven, we believe that the greatest force in the world is the power of love. It is out of love for our family, friends and all mankind, that we all arrive each day passionately prepared to commit our time and energy to improving the lives of others. It is out of this same commitment and love that our donors and partners give joyously to support our mission of empowering others.

Homelessness is often misunderstood. Sadly, we know that it is human nature to judge. However, by opening our hearts and minds, and by taking a moment to look at someone in need with a lens of compassion, we learn every day that each of our residents has a story of pain and despair. Sometimes all it takes as a first step is a little nurturing, and yes, sometimes a little ‘tough love’ to help them re-discover their value and to learn to love themselves again.

Science tells us that positive outcomes in recovery are intrinsically linked to human attachment. The ability to form bonds, feel understood, and relate to those around us are some of the most basic human needs- and essential to living a fulfilling life. That is why we work so hard to surround our residents with a team made up of not only experienced and professionally trained people, but also the kindest people in the world, while providing safe and inviting living space. True healing is about a lot more than a roof and a bed; it is about the community of love we are able to create. I am so proud to say that for over 22 years we have been working to support our community’s most vulnerable individuals, by supplying them with housing; and by surrounding them with a loving atmosphere.

It is my hope that through our loving actions combined with yours that we are able to continually inspire people everywhere to join us and to share their love for humanity through service and support. You never know, perhaps by uniting in unconditional love for mankind, we may actually unlock the ‘key’ to widespread happiness!

  • Reflecting on Leadership, What D...

What defines leadership? For many, a leader is defined as a person who possesses lots of charisma, a certain gravitas, the ability to speak eloquently and to inspire the masses. While I always appreciate a good speech, for me nothing beats actions; actions inspire me far more than words. Sadly, throughout history we can all point to some of the most charismatic people in the world, such as Hitler in Nazi Germany or Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, who used their…

Summer break means something different to you depending on where you grew up. To some youth, summer means travelling abroad with their families to countries in Europe or Asia to visit, tour and to learn about other cultures, to play on sandy Florida beaches, or to pick up a few summer school classes, or for some it means working a few more hours at your part time job to make some extra money before you go back to school. …

  • Each Drop of Support Matters

The success stories of men, women, youth and children completing their recovery programs at A Safe Haven Foundation inspire us and give us hope. I think we can all be more at peace knowing that there is a fully developed and scalable system that exists at A Safe Haven, and just needs to be supported and amplified to replicate its success to help meet the urgent and growing unmet demand for our unique and individualized services across the city,…

We Measure Our Social Impact: By the Number of People that Become Clean, Sober, Housed, & Employed    “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” To truly transform a life and to help someone attain the success that they are able to reach, all “links” in the “chain” of services needed to give them a lifeline back to a life anchored for success must be integrated and they must be strong. The most important link of all is…

  • Mothers Incarcerated

There is nothing more heart-wrenching than to see a mother and/or father being separated from their children. No matter the reason, legal or not.  Over the years, we have all seen too many laws passed with perhaps ‘good intentions’, at the time, only to cause tremendous collateral damage to millions of innocent lives, especially children.  The war on drugs and the trend towards incarcerating those addicted and in desperate need of treatment is a good example. I come from the…
