Announcing the 2017 Official Honorary Co-Chairs & Host Committee For the 5K RUN! To End Homelessness

Great News!! There is no debate on whether we should end poverty and homelessness, and we are excited to say that it is time to take action. Together we are going to vote with our feet, and help the poverty-stricken and homeless in our State get back on track!

We are joining forces with our elected officials and our communities across the State to make homelessness history, folks!

By walking, running, recruiting, fundraising and showing up to stand in solidarity, our elected officials are leading thousands of their neighbors and constituents to make a statement. What they represent to the Nation and the World is that while our governmental budgets, at almost all levels, are at a huge critical juncture, and at a time when our State is at a two year budget impasse that regardless of any issue that is considered debatable and keeps us apart, we know that everyone in our State deep down can agree that we must do our part to help rebuild lives caught in broken systems and the vicious, costly cycle of poverty and homelessness.

By unifying on this ‘single’ issue we are focusing on one of the most powerful ways that we can measurably and truly save lives, stabilize families and communities and hence we are inevitably restoring our budgets in human services, criminal justice, corrections, public housing, by significantly reducing our costs associated with poverty like drug addiction, crime, academic performance and much, much more.

For the last six months at A Safe Haven our team has worked hard to plan, organize, and invite everyone to join us; and today we are so excited to have organized one of the most fun, impactful opportunities to connect all of our alums, partners and stakeholders!

As you get the opportunity to meet, greet, and run or walk alongside your elected officials, we encourage you to thank them for showing up, and for stepping up to support this very important cause on behalf of those in crisis, and let them know that you are grateful for their efforts to prioritize this crucial issue affecting our budgets, but more importantly, for taking the time to represent so many powerless and voiceless people and families in crisis in our society today!

By the way, if you think your fast or have a friend that can be a ‘ringer’ for you and want to attend Riotfest for Free, sign up today! Thanks to Riotfest, (voted America’s top concert series) we have over 100 3-day passes to give away to the top 50 runners (limit two per winner – almost $400 value!!)

Thanks again to all of our top elected officials for serving on our Honorary Host Committee and for lacing up their gym shoes and for taking the pledge, canvassing all of their supporters and joining our Honorary Host committee to support the homeless in our State!

As elected officials they understand the importance of being a voice, fundraising, recruiting support and showing up to vote! I wish them all luck as they have the ability to compete and win top prizes as they apply their significant well-honed skills and prowess in these areas to support the cause.  You can help your favorite community leader win by joining or donating to his/her team, look them up on the 5k registration page!

Our pledge to you is that all proceeds we raise will go directly toward funding the programs our city so desperately needs. Once you’ve registered, don’t forget to spread the word and share with us how you’re preparing for the race with the hashtag #5kSavesLives and we’ll give you a shout out from our race team on social media.

Thank you so much to the leaders and everyone alike for joining the fight to end homelessness! We look forward to running alongside you on race day.

The world celebrated what would have been Nelson Mandela ‘s 100th birthday this week, so I was thinking; my husband, Brian Rowland, and I can give some credit to his inspiring speeches about apartheid to actually helping open our eyes to the fact that our own government systems, too, were broken and trapping too many people in social, mental and economic crisis in our own respective oppressive systems. We privately thought to ourselves is it not called ‘grand standing’ when we act…

  • Happy Mother’s Day!

My Dear Friends, Happy Mother’s Day!  They say the closest thing to describe Gods love for us, is a Mothers love for her child. If this is True then, His love must be truly Great because I cannot imagine a greater love than a Mothers love for her own children. I think that almost all Moms will also agree that the greatest gift for every mother is the peace of mind of knowing her children are healthy and happy! My heart goes out to any…

Dear Friends, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” -Mahatma Ghandi I am saddened to say that last week our family suffered the loss of my beloved mother in law as she succumbed to a two-year battle with the horrible and incurable, debilitating disease of ALS; ‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’.  My own father died from Cancer over 30 years ago when I was very young and I lost a brother to Diabetes several years ago.  While they died from terrible…
